Kant on Objects and Things

چکیده

I show that Kant’s phrase Ding an sich denotes, not a type of thing, but a type of object: namely, an object which is per se a thing. My interpretation is based on the assumption that Kant follows the traditional use of the terms objectum and res. Kant’s distinction between phenomenon and noumenon is a distinction between types of object: a “distinction of all objects in general into phenomena and noumena.”1 Specifically, it is a distinction between two ways in which an act of intellection can have an object: either mediately, via a faculty of sense, or immediately, via the intellect alone: Concepts can be logically compared without concerning oneself as to where their objects belong: whether as noumena for the intellect [Verstand ]2 or as phenomena for sensibility. If, however, we want to go with these concepts to their objects, then transcendental reflection is first necessary, [as to] for which cognitive power they are to be objects, whether for pure intellect or for sensibility. (KrV A269/B325) Since the same thing may be the object of different faculties, such a distinction between types of object may not correspond to any distinction between types of thing. 1Title of the third part of the Analytic of Principles, KrV A235/B294. 2Verstand is the standard German equivalent for νοῦς = ↪aql = intellectus. Since I will be tracing Kant’s terminology to Greek, Arabic, and Latin sources, it is convenient to translate Verstand as “intellect.” $Id: kant_objects_long.tex,v 3.3 2016/09/11 17:10:56 abestone Exp $

The Subjective and Corporeal Perception of the Cinematographic Frame According to Kantian Viewpoint

The cinematographic frame is a boundary which separates the image from the external world. From an ontological viewpoint which dates back to Greek philosophy, the boundary of a thing separates it from other things, thus leading to its ontological independence from other things. But, according to this point of view, the being of things as external objects is considered to be free from the impact...

Kant and Hegel on Aesthetic Reflexivity

The paper aims at reevaluating a conception of the aesthetic that was developed by Kant and Hegel but that has been widely neglected due to the fact that their positions in aesthetics have been wrongly considered to be antagonistic to one another. The conception states that the aesthetic is a practice of reflecting on other human practices. Kant was the first to articulate this conception, but ...

Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason Reading Guide

1. Kant uses the terms perception, appearance, object, thing, and thing in itself throughout this book. Many of the most common misinterpretations of Kant arise from mistakenly reading the term “appearance” to mean something like “mere appearance,” that is, an illusion of a thing, or just an idea of a thing, or a perception of a thing. For Kant, the term “appearance” is synonymous with the term...

CHAPTER 7 Real Repugnance and Belief about Things - in - Themselves : A Problem and Kant ’ s Three Solutions

Kant famously claims that it can be rational to accept propositions on the basis of non-epistemic or broadly practical considerations, under certain circumstances, even if those propositions include “transcendental ideas” of supersensible objects. But he also worries about how such “ideas” (of freedom, the soul, noumenal grounds, God, the kingdom of ends, things-in-themselves generally) acquire...
